Classic small batch winemaking. Taking beautiful Syrah grapes and guiding them into a wonderful Syrah wine is what keeps our family hooked on making wines. It was one of those picture perfect harvests when everyone gathered around while 'punch down's' were being done.
We hope you'll get a chance to enjoy as many bottles as you can stash away. It's a benchmark Syrah with deep garnet colors and a medium to big body that rolls around in your glass. The aroma opens slowly. It's a wine that is best enjoyed when decanted.
Fermented in small bins, the grapes were slowly fermented and punched down or pumped-over every four hours to maximize the color and flavors. Once the wine was finished fermenting and completely dry, it was moved into French oak barrels in the winery. Watched over and topped for 20 months, the wine evolved. Lightly filtered before bottling, it captures all the classic Rhone flavors of a ripe 100% Syrah wine. Guest winemakers Erin O'Brien and Bruce Rigalia pitched in with this harvest.
Red Hills AVA sits at the foot of the ancient volcano Mount Konocti, bounded by the high volcanic peaks of the Mayacamas Mountains. The rolling volcanic terrain of the region is in dramatic contrast to the wider valleys and higher mountains of the surrounding viticulture areas of Lake County. The area has gently sloping, rolling terrain, with elevations ranging from 1,400 to 3,000 feet above sea level. The cooling afternoon breezes found at these moderate elevations contribute to the favorable growing conditions of the region. Over 90% of the soils in Red Hills are of volcanic origin from neighboring Mount Konocti, producing well-drained earth that is rich in black obsidian and gravel content, and strikingly red in color. The cool afternoon breezes created by Mount Konocti and offshore winds from Clear Lake combined with cool nights help preserve the acidity of the grapes and slow the ripening process, enhancing the flavor and complexity of the wine.
Dark garnet hues in the glass. The body is medium to big.
We suggest decanting. With time to open in the glass, look for vivid aromas of fresh grapes as well as the aromas of clove, cedar shavings and white pepper. This is a classic big California rich Syrah with balanced acid and tannins. A weighty juicy mid palate coats the back of the mouth with cassis, dark cherry, dark chocolate, and cigar box.
The finish again shows the integrated tannins with lingering hints of truffle, black berry and cherry.
The rich flavors, balanced body and lingering finish are the signature style of Charbay winemaking.
Ready now and will continue to mellow.
This is one of those small lot releases that is available only at the Winery.
