2012 Blazing Pans Champion Elsa Corrigan faces off with the talented and wildly popular Chef Mark Estee of Campo Restaurant in Reno. These two fearless competitors will prepare four courses of restaurant-quality dishes in the hour-long battle featuring a secret ingredient that is revealed at the very last second. Last year, Elsa took the crown using crawfish from Lake Tahoe. The event features a classic handcrafted Charbay Cocktail shaken by Marko Karakasevic, 13th generation Master Distiller from Charbay Artisan Winery& Distillery, St. Helena, Calif. The winner of Blazing Pans receives an award and forever bragging rights. Costumes, noisemakers, and air horns are encouraged. Teams should rally to cheer on their favorite chef. The most anticipated food, wine, spirits and brew event of the year. An alfresco afternoon tasting features more than 30 top chefs in the region paired with 30 premium wines, spirits and brews in a formally judged food and wine pairing competition. Each chef's dish is paired with a varietal and vintage from the winery of their choice. It's a culinary throw-down and the chefs compete for the Best Marriage of Food and Wine/Beverage and Best Food categories. The offerings are judged by a panel of food and wine industry experts, then the pairings are opened for ticket holders to enjoy. Sun, Jul 14, 6-9pm: CUESA's 3rd Annual Summer Celebration, San Francisco - An evening supporting 20 years of connecting urban eaters and local farmers and artisans Guests will feast on unlimited food and drink at the themed tasting areas, where chefs and bartenders have been challenged to create dishes that highlight each grouping. Imagine an eggplant baklava with tomato honey (nightshades) or pork confit with blackberry-habanero salsa (berries) or a sip of an aperitif made with California poppies (leaves and flowers). And what CUESA event would be complete without the presence of farmers, displaying their bounty and offering farm-fresh tastes, as well as hands-on educational activities and fun? Proceeds from the night provide much needed support for CUESA's ongoing education initiatives, including free cooking demos, kitchen skill-building classes, the Schoolyard to Market youth entrepreneurship program, and sustainability scholarships for farmers. Mon, Jun 3, 8-10pm: Whiskey Monday at Ward III (Tribeca, NYC)
A good bar is more than just a place to drink and eat, it is the center of a community that is anchored by the space itself and those involved in its creation. Ward III was founded in June of 2009 by three journeymen bartenders who took their individual ideas on what makes a bar good and combined them in an attempt to make something great. Founded by cocktail veterans Abdul Tabini, Kenneth McCoy, and Michael Neff, Ward III features bespoke cocktails, extensive food offerings and one of the city's most highly regarded brown spirits programs, as noted by GQ Magazine who recently named it one of the "Ten Best Whiskey Bars in America". Join us for an evening as we learn the alchemy behind how Charbay Distillery turns craft beer into two of the finest Whiskeys on the market. We'll taste through the progression of how two whiskeys (Charbay R5 distilled from Racer 5 IPA and Charbay S distilled from Big Black Bear Stout) transition from bottle-ready Bear Republic Craft Beer to unaged whiskey and then to oak aged whiskey.
